What a Difference

What a difference a calendar quarter makes. Back in early February when I wrote the Winter 2020 edition of Follow the Leader, our biggest worries included Edmonton’s winter weather and we let the world know a little bit about The Vogel Group’s involvement and commitment to our community.

No April Fool’s Joke

How the world has changed. In this COVID-19 environment, The Vogel Group are all working remotely from home. Which is a little ironic as we took possession on April 1st (no April Fool’s joke here) of our brand-new office in 103 Street Centre. While the official move-in date is later this month, the space looks great and we are looking forward to personally welcoming you with a handshake or a hug as soon as it is safe to do so. Our emails and phone numbers remain unchanged and we will officially announce our new address following the move.

Stay Disciplined… and Wash Your Hands!

New office aside, we are in for a tough time, along with most Albertans. The economy is grinding to a halt, unemployment is going up and organizational uncertainty is at a level I have never seen in my 34 years in the workplace.

So what can we all do? Stay disciplined with the advice and guidance from our health leaders. Stay at home. Wash your hands regularly. Practise social distancing. Wash your hands regularly. Stay in touch with your family, friends and personal network. And wash your hands regularly.

We have been bombarded with how to wash our hands. For the science behind it, click here.

Thank the essential service workers you see at the gas station, grocery store, bank, delivering something to your door, hospital and operating our public transportation. They put themselves and their families at risk so we can function reasonably well. We can’t thank them too much.

Stay Connected

We don’t know when we will “get back to normal” or even what the normal will look like. But The Vogel Group will be here when that happens. At this time, we are reaching out to stay connected with all our clients, candidates, vendors and contacts. There is absolutely something therapeutic, comforting and cathartic in connecting over FaceTime, Zoom or Skype to say “hi”, to share a smile or to lift someone’s sprits who may be struggling.

What Have We Been Up To?

This quarter we’ve completed following searches:

Executive Director & Registrar for Alberta College and Association of Opticians

Manager, Financial Planning and Budgets for Athabasca University

Operations Manager, Microtunneling for The Crossing Group

Vice President, Academic for Medicine Hat College

What Roles Should be on Your Radar?

Currently we’re working on:

Board of Directors for Capital Region Housing Corporation

Director, Retail Strategy & Environmental Sustainability for Habitat for Humanity

Leadership Development Program for Beaver Municipal Solutions

Know of anyone that may be interested in hearing more about these current searches?

Snapshots can be found at: https://thevogelgroup.ca/current-opportunities/.

A number of our clients have understandably “hit the pause button” on current search projects, but we are in constant communication with them and hope these projects come back online soon.

Until our next newsletter in July, The Vogel Group wishes for you and your families to stay safe and healthy. It is being said over and over but we are truly in this together. And we WILL get through this together. We look forward to staying connected throughout this time and being able to “share some personal space” with you in the foreseeable future.

Until Next Time,
Rick, Julie, Rae Ann, Renee and Steven
We’re Here for You!

“What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness” – John Steinbeck

As we have continually expressed in this quarterly commentary, we love our City. Yes, it can get pretty cold as the middle of January rudely reminded us. There is no doubt that is has been very, very – VERY cold in Edmonton and in our province. All of us Edmontonians found no solace in the media educating us all about the Frigid Arctic air that swept across Western Canada while comparing actual temperature to the “what it really feels like” temperature. Amidst winter’s fierce pounce, we continue to choose to live and truly be a part of our City.

#MyYegWinter

Boasting our pride to the world, we are in fact a winter city. The City of Edmonton has been diligent in helping us reclaim and embrace our winter season. Edmonton stands out from the crowd and somehow, we bundle up (maybe complain a bit), survive the cold snaps and get to enjoy and experience unique benefits this City has to offer.

Aside from cross-country skiing, skating, snowshoeing, tobogganing and fat-tire biking, we have professional sports teams, an amazing creative arts community (live theatre, opera, symphony, Art Gallery of Alberta), festivals (so many that we are also known as the Festival City), our spectacular river valley and our wide range of educational institutions.

#yegcommunity – Edmontonians Care

Our services to our clients include providing relocation support when needed. “Selling” Edmonton and the Greater Edmonton Area and attracting outstanding leaders is what we take pride in. What do we hear the most from new citizens? We hear about the people. We hear that Edmontonians are warm. We hear that Edmontonians are friendly. And we hear that we are welcoming and always open to lending out a helping hand wherever possible. This is probably why we have an international reputation for outstanding volunteerism for events or causes. Whether it’s the Commonwealth Games, the 2001 Universiade, Grey Cup, the many world-renowned festivals, ITU Grande Finale Triathlon, professional conferences or the largest community league federation in Canada – Edmontonians step up to help each other.

This “care for each other” is evidenced every day by the incredible work done by so many organizations that exist to help people and make our community better – some of them our clients! The list of these organizations seem endless within our community. And we follow suit. The Vogel Group closed our office for half a day recently to volunteer at Bissell Centre. This 110-year old pillar of our community works with communities to empower people to move from poverty to cultural, social and economic prosperity. Working with their dedicated staff and volunteers, we experienced first-hand, the great work they do.

The Vogel Group are involved in our community year round. Whether it’s the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation, coaching kid’s hockey, volunteering for the annual ITU Triathlon or establishing our office as a drop off site for donations for Little Warriors, we believe in being part of this great City in more ways than just executing outstanding recruitment for our clients.

We Continue to Grow

We are thrilled to have Renee Henry join our team as Principal. With 3 recruitment designations and over 11 years of experience recruiting senior executives across Canada and the United States, Renee brings tremendous value and expertise to all of our clients.

A professional recruiter, Renee has executed searches for positions across Canada and the U.S. within various industries including oil and gas, power generation, construction, manufacturing and fabrication, engineering, health and safety, supply chain, technology, accounting and finance, human resources and for legal counsels.

Welcome, Renee!

Follow the Leader!

THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM THE VOGEL GROUP – FALL EDITION

Personal Yet Relevant to Business

Welcome to our Fall 2019 issue of Follow the Leader. While I will get to business in a minute, this edition is going to be a little more personal, albeit very relevant to business…

On Tuesday, October 1st I suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage. It was immediate. It was quick. And it was scary. I am now very familiar with SAH, a type of stroke referring to bleeding within the subarachnoid space – the area between the brain and the tissues that cover the brain.

It’s been a roller coaster of a month… ups, downs and uncertainty. Thankfully, aside from aching to get back to physical activity, I have no impairments and am looking at a 100% recovery. I am beyond lucky.

Aside from the obvious personal perspective taken from this unexpected interruption in my life, during this month of October I have also had the opportunity to reflect and have learned something new about business. We have all felt the pressures and sheer exhaustion as an employee, as a business owner, or as a member of senior leadership at some point. Keeping your employees happy, and your clients happier. Making those deadlines and beating the clock. Keeping commitments. Exceeding last year’s bottom line.

This month, though, I learned something new. There is no real urgency in business. The real urgency should be in what’s truly important to you.

When I was first told they thought I had an aneurysm, urgency took on a whole new definition. This was an emergency and I was immediately transported to another hospital. I had to have a conversation with my wife and one of my sons (the other was on his way from Vancouver) as if it was the last time I would speak to them. What was truly important to me became my urgency.

As I said, I am looking at a complete recovery and am extremely lucky. But I learned that nothing in business is as urgent as telling the people most important in your life that you love them and you are proud of them. That report promised to your client on Friday can go out on Saturday, or even Monday morning if need be. Responding to all those emails within a day, could be completed within a day or two. Whether an employee, a business owner or a member of senior leadership, business would still continue. There isn’t really an urgency in business.

What is far more urgent is that the people most important in your life know what you mean to them. Tell them you love them. Tell them you are proud of them. You may not have Saturday or Monday morning to do that. Do it every day. Make it urgent.

A Time to Give Thanks

I would be remiss in not recognizing my team since my reduced capacity in the office. There has been nary a beat missed since my incident – so a huge thank you and kudos to the team for pulling together – Julie, Steve and Rae Ann.

– Rick

Kudos!

Every year, aside from celebrating Thanksgiving with friends, family and loved ones, The Vogel Group takes time to say thank you to our clients. Our annual Thanksgiving Open House was held in our office complete with nibbles, wine and great company. Thank you to our clients:

This Past Quarter

THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM THE VOGEL GROUP – SUMMER EDITION

The Results are In

In our previous newsletter, we mentioned the lingering uncertainty regarding the 2019 Alberta Provincial election. Did you know we set the record at this election? A record number of electors chose to vote in advance polls – 36.7%, in fact – the highest seen in any Canadian federal, provincial or territorial election.

While the results are in, there are still lingering questions and concerns that will take time to work through:

Will our new Premier have any more success in getting our resources to new markets?

How will the two major cities in Alberta – Edmonton and Calgary – who voted in opposite directions, work together to advance all our causes and needs?

How will the overall Alberta frustration with the Federal Government play into all this, especially with the upcoming Fall election?

Will the Oilers make the playoffs this year? (We told you some questions are still lingering.)

A City on the Brink of Reinvention – Edmonton Economic Development

It can be easy to get distracted by these questions but we here at The Vogel Group prefer to work with the things we know:

Edmonton is a great city to live, work and play. In fact, the Urban Work Index (put together by RBC Future launch and YouthfulCities) recently ranked our city as number 1 in Canada for youth to work in.

Our city is in the midst of a $5 billion transformation of active development and investment in downtown.

There is no better place in the country to be than The Festival City during the summer. The endless festivals and events throughout this season brings an energy in the air, and we have long days to enjoy them…. we may just need an umbrella on hand.

Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation Celebrates 25 Years!

As the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital Foundation (GRHF) celebrated 25 years recently, they are excited to begin sharing stories of those who have been instrumental in leading the Foundation to where it is today. One of those stories include our Founding Principal and Board Chair of the GRHF, Rick Vogel.

Insight into his journey can be found on our site here.

What Have We Been Up To?

We have been busy ensuring our clients’ success. When you work with us, we take the time to know you and understand your team, your culture, needs, challenges, history, structure and goals – all before beginning the actual search process. You’ll never have to ‘settle’ for a candidate.

THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM THE VOGEL GROUP – SPRING EDITION

Spring 2019

Another quarter has passed – it seems everyone made it through this ‘winter vortex’. We at The Vogel Group have had a busy first few months so far this year. By continually strengthening and maintaining solid relationships, over half of our current searches are from repeat clients. Our team, in fact, is flourishing with our solid group of 4. Quickly unifying and honing in on everyone’s expertise, we are confident a stable platform has been set for a successful year.

Business aside, spring is here! So many signs say it’s definitely arrived; hopefully here to stay:

The days are getting longer and warmer

You might have heard honking followed by the “V”s overhead!

Local driving ranges are open, and the greens are coming along nicely

Patios are being set up for the first hint of +18

Edmonton’s line-up of local festivals is booked for the year for everyone to take in.

This first quarter of 2019 has brought some surprising, and not so surprising, changes within our city:

After 21 years as the Shaw Conference Centre, events will now be within the Edmonton Convention Centre

Our new city hall fountain is underway; foundations are being set as you read

Completion for Aurora Cannabis’ 800,000-square-foot facility was in January

Amazon is expanding; plans have begun to open a 1-million ft2 facility in Leduc County. It will be awhile still before you can expect your purchase within hours; it’s expected to open in early 2020

A sneak peek was given inside the Rossdale Power Plant. It’s intriguing to know what plans lie ahead for this beautiful piece of architecture

Election day was on April 16 resulting in Jason Kenney leading UCP to majority

And our Edmonton Oilers. Thinking about the Oilers – the ‘what if’ and ‘what could’ve been’ if the Edmonton Oilers made the post-season, just someway, somehow, something…

“…how do you ensure the quality of your work compared to firms that have many more people on their team?”

We have often been asked (more like challenged) as to how a boutique executive/leadership search firm based in Edmonton is able to truly conduct national searches. Our Fall 2018 issue of Follow the Leader provided both our thoughts as well as evidence from recent search assignments that we not only conduct national searches, but we excel at them.

I recently presented (as part of a competition to earn a new search) and was asked the following question, “With such a small team (4 of us), how do you ensure the quality of your work compared to firms that have many more people on their team?” It’s a relevant question and, indeed, one that I had not been asked before.

“Ensuring the quality of work is easier to do so with a smaller team.”

My short answer was short and simple, “Ensuring the quality of work is easier to do so with a smaller team.” With many large firms there’s a chain of command. Typically, the Partner/CEO may be the individual presenting to potential clients and bringing in business. Very often, they may be joined by a “senior” recruiter (i.e. Director, Principal, VP) to meet with the newly earned clients. Once back to the office, the senior recruiter may engage junior staff to begin research and conduct preliminary candidate assessments. It may be this person, or another individual who conducts the in-depth candidate interviews and the reference checks. There is an old saying – “too many chefs spoil the soup.”

Our model is different.

We have three Principals with 12+ years of extensive recruitment experience and expertise. Upon engagement, your Principal will be your sole contact throughout the search duration. They will meet with you to understand your organization, your culture, history and challenges, and your needs of the role. They will gain insight into your organization’s goals, leadership style and the personality required for success. Your Principal will be the one conducted research, reaching out to potential candidates, conducting pre-screen assessments, conducting in-depth interviews and providing our recommendations. Your Principal will be the one generating and providing your weekly reports, writing your candidate summaries, partnering with you during the short list interview process, preparing all your reference reports and written summaries, and working with you to provide the offer. Once the search is done it’s certainly not complete. The Vogel Group stands behind their standard of excellence and commitment to our clients. Your Principal will be in contact with you and your new hire throughout their first year with your team.

Our focus on fewer assignments delivers better results.

The follow up question to my response was, “How can one Principal do all the work on any given search?” Very simple answer – we are exceedingly selective on how many searches we have at any given time and very selective on the types of searches we accept. Our focus on fewer assignments delivers better results.

The Vogel Group stands behind their standard of excellence and commitment to our clients. Don’t believe us – ask our clients.

We understand that it is rather self-serving to tell you why we are different and better than other firms. The Vogel Group stands behind their standard of excellence and commitment to our clients. We are continually receiving feedback that our model works for everyone engaged. Don’t believe us – ask our clients.

Since our last issue of Follow the Leader in January, we have completed the following searches:

Chief Engineer for Universal Handling based in Red Deer, AB

Conduct Counsel for CARNA

Director of Human Resources for Capital Region Housing

Office Manager for The Crossing Group for their Kamloops, BC office

Senior Estimator for Kichton Contracting Ltd.

Business has certainly picked up for The Vogel Group and this spring, we are currently working on these exciting positions for the following great organizations:

Board of Directors for Edmonton Economic Development Corporation (EEDC)

Board of Directors for Capital Region Housing

Chief Programs Officer for Bissell Centre

Director, Capital Developments for Capital Region Housing

Director, Customer Services for Capital Region Housing

Divisional Director of Microtunneling for The Crossing Group

Registrar, College of Registered Dental Hygienists of Alberta (CRDHA)

Vice President, Academic for Medicine Hat College

THE QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FROM THE VOGEL GROUP

Happy New Year!

As we say good bye to 2018 and welcome 2019, we are excited about the new year and what’s in store.

Over the past year there have been many local highlights:

Our Edmonton skyline is seeing the finishing touches on the JW Marriott, the Edmonton Tower and of course, the Stantec Tower, Canada’s tallest building west of Toronto at 66-storeys.

The outlet mall opened near the Edmonton International Airport, opening their doors to shoppers and to job seekers with over 1,000 jobs up for grabs.

We, once again, showed off the Edmonton spirit by hosting the 106th Grey Cup game and festival – hosting as only Edmonton can host with world-class entertainment – on a year that marked the 40th anniversary of the Commonwealth Stadium and the 70th anniversary of the team’s play as the Edmonton Eskimos.

The ‘Lawnmower Man’. This now-famous shot taken by a woman in Three Hills was captured when her husband was trying to finish mowing the lawn, amidst a tornado seen twisting behind him on the horizon.

There was definitely uncertainty in the air as well:

We will have both a provincial and federal election this year. Regardless of the outcome, there will not be an easy road ahead.

Cannabis is now a legal product as of October 17, 2018, upon Canada legalizing recreational marijuana.

Interest rates are on the rise…or are they?

Pipelines…say no more.

The Vogel Group is Growing

In spite of today’s uncertainties, we are pleased to be able to say with certainty that The Vogel Group is growing.

Just before the holiday season, Steven Davidson joined our team. He brings more than thirteen years of recruitment expertise as well as certification for a wide range of psychometric assessment tools. Prior to recruiting, he spent nearly a decade in the steel fabrication and manufacturing industries, with clients across the province. During his recruitment career, Steven has executed numerous searches for construction, manufacturing, supply chain, oil and gas, bio-pharmaceutical, finance companies, as well as within many other industries, for senior leadership from front-line leaders to C-Suite executives.

We look forward to his expertise and new network of candidates and clients he will bring to The Vogel Group.

Steven Davidson’s complete bio can be found at: https://thevogelgroup.ca/our-leaders/.

Follow the Leader!

Thank you for choosing to follow the leader.

Thank Goodness!

Well, the summer is over, and the fall colours are showing albeit briefly. At least, as of the writing of this newsletter, we haven’t had winter thrust upon us like other parts of the province. Thank goodness! Another reason to have been thankful over the past Thanksgiving weekend.

Can We Really Scour the Country?

Within the past few years, more and more clients are asking us to search for candidates across the country. It used to be more common for the scope of a search to be more local (within the City or even just the province). Increasingly though, our clients are asking us to find outstanding talent – wherever it resides.

So, here’s a question we get asked regularly,

“Can a specialized boutique search firm in Edmonton, with only a handful of professionals, really scour the country for talent?”

The answer is absolutely. The search world has changed drastically over the years and a big factor has been technology. In the “old days” (all of 20 years ago), you hired a recruiter with the biggest Rolodex. Hopefully, he/she had offices or colleagues in other cities with similar sized Rolodexes to find candidates across the country suitable for the sought position. Today’s Rolodex is now the World Wide Web. We all have it and we all know how to use it, especially since Google recently stopped by with their Grow with Google tour, providing local entrepreneurs with training to use their digital platforms.

From our office on 104 Street and Jasper Avenue, we can confidently find individuals in any sector, any functionality, from any industry anywhere in Canada. Not only can we identify and initiate contact with these potential candidates, we can conduct a “face-to-face” meeting without leaving our respective offices (Facetime, Skype, etc.). Don’t get me wrong, there is always a preference to be physically “face-to-face” when meeting someone and we certainly strive to do so once we have narrowed to a selected pool of candidates. But we can now effectively and efficiently meet, screen and assess people wherever they live.

Over the past 12 months our firm has successfully completed 11 searches for our clients requesting a national candidate reach (5 of those with repeat clients). These searches generated 873 candidates in total (259 from within the Greater Edmonton area) with:

90 within Alberta, but outside the Greater Edmonton area;

461 across Canada, excluding Alberta; and

47 from the United States; and 16 internationally

Ultimately 7 of the 11 placed candidates required relocation to Edmonton – exciting news for us and for our city. Keep in mind, once a successful candidate is chosen, The Vogel Group’s work doesn’t end there. For those requiring relocation, any assistance to ensure the candidate’s move is as smooth and successful as possible is made by providing city and community information. We ensure they arrive with their parka, or know where to get one, and know that Edmonton’s most dangerous predator is the mosquito!

Source: bestcities.org

Our Festival City has grown immensely; in fact, we are listed as one of the World’s Best Cities 2018 (as compiled by Resonance Consultancy).

So, when we say our firm has local expertise with national scope, we can truly back that up. Besides, who best to sell the attributes of living in Edmonton than us – the people who work, live and play here?

What Have We Been Up To?

Since our last issue of Follow the Leader, searches we have completed or currently have on the go include:
