Audit Manager - Auditor General of Alberta

The Office of the Auditor General of Alberta (OAG) is an office of 150 professionals mandated by the Auditor General Act to examine and report publicly on the Government of Alberta’s management of the public resources entrusted to it. They report directly to the 87 Members of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta, and through them, serve the more than four million people who call Alberta home.

Reporting to an Engagement Leader, you will demonstrate your extensive knowledge of financial statement audit methodology and accounting standards, while thoroughly assessing and analyzing complex accounting and audit issues. In addition to financial statement audits, you will also be responsible for performance audits and take a leadership role in auditing and examining government management control systems and processes designed to achieve specific objectives. You will lead the planning, execution, and reporting of both financial and performance audits, while ensuring effective and compliant reporting with auditing standards and legislation.

As an Audit Manager, you will enable a team of independent, self-managed professionals through on-the-job coaching and use a collaborative process that fosters employee ownership and personal responsibility. Your role also includes mentoring CPA candidates and acting as a People Leader— providing direction, guidance and support to staff and input into People and Culture processes, while driving engagement and accountability.

  • A Canadian CPA Designation with the right to practice public accounting.
  • A minimum of five years of directly related audit experience, including the development of detailed audit plans, risk and control assessment.
  • Experience in a supervisory or managerial role and leading teams.
  • In-depth knowledge of Canadian Auditing Standards is required, and familiarity with Canadian Public Sector Accounting Standards and IFRS is desired.
  • Detailed in-depth knowledge of financial statements audit standards.
  • Detailed knowledge of legislative financial statements audit methodology, policies and procedures.
  • In-depth knowledge of CAS, the Office’s financial statements methodology and tools/templates.
  • In-depth knowledge of PSAS and/or IFRS, as applicable and proposed changes to standards.
  • Working knowledge of CAATs.
  • Working knowledge of provincial government and legislation.
  • Understanding of quality assurance policies, particularly related to project performance, consultations, EQCRs and quality control (i.e. quality control sheet).

  • Ability to lead and manage multiple projects.
  • Ability to instruct, supervise and mentor staff.
  • Ability to manage large sets of data.

Manage multiple projects and lead audit teams                                                                          

  • Responsible for the execution of work in assigned portfolio, including delegation and allocation of work.
  • Keeps current on emerging technical and/or industry issues and anticipating the effect of these issues on entities in an assigned audit portfolio.

Assist the Engagement Leader in audit portfolio planning                                                       

  • Prepares a detailed budget in line with the time and levels of staff scheduled in Retain.
  • Conducts issues analysis by following procedures and documenting analysis/conclusions in a timely manner.
  • Engages information systems group and directs their scope of work during planning process.

Develop and execute detailed audit plans     

  • Owns the audit process in terms of initiation, coordination and scheduling, and preparation of the audit plan.
  • Communicates and resolves issues arising from interim testing and testing of GCCR’s.
  • Conducts thorough review of audit work and required documentation.
  • Monitors budget and communicates variances/issues to Engagement Leader.

Oversee audit quality on assigned projects  

  • Prepares/coordinates preparation of high-quality communications, including recommendations for improvement.
  • Presents/assists in the presentation of reporting to the Deputy Minister/Audit Committee/Board.

Build and maintain relationships throughout the audit process                                               

  • Actively seeks a robust understanding of the portfolio entity and their business issues and communicates these issues to the audit team.
  • Builds relationships with entities by maintaining ongoing communications during and between audits.
  • Provides mentorship as a Career Advisor to staff auditors                                                  
  • Supports learning and development of staff auditors by coaching and mentoring, utilizing the PDP tool.
