Director of Development - Calgary Quest Children's Society

Calgary Quest Children’s Society (“CQCS”) is a vibrant and innovative organization offering programs to children, teens, and young adults with moderate to severe developmental disabilities and support to their families. They have been providing valuable service to Calgarians for almost 45 years.

The Director of Development is a strategic and visionary leader responsible for driving all fundraising and development initiatives to support CQCS’s mission and long-term sustainability.

This role involves including annual giving, major gifts, foundation and corporate grant writing, events, donor cultivation and stewardship and strategic partnerships. The Director of Development will work closely with the Executive Director, the management team and key stakeholders to build and grow meaningful partnerships and philanthropic support. Additionally, the ability to liaise with the Board of Directors and committees, develop budgets, manage significant change, and build a strong internal and external network are essential.

This Director currently has a Community Engagement Coordinator as a direct report.

This position is based in Calgary.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years’ experience and possess a successful track record in all facets of fund development, including grant strategy and development, annual campaign development cultivation, prospecting, solicitation, and stewardship.

  • Experience in major donor development, donor management, marketing and internal and external communications.
  • Grant development annual campaign development.
  • Capital campaign experience is an asset.
  • Previous work within the not-for-profit sector.
  • CFRE designation would be an asset.
  • Has the ability to handle sensitive and strategic information with discretion.
  • Can demonstrate successful experience liaising with the Board of Directors and/or Fund Development Committees.
  • Has proficiency in developing budgets.
  • Demonstrates a proficiency with donor databases or CRMs (e.g. Keela).
  • Has a familiarity with Canva, GrantConnect.  MailChimp (would be an asset).
  • Participate in hiring decisions as it relates to fund development, marketing & communications.
  • Develop and revise CQCS relevant policies and procedures, ensuring policies are in line with legal requirements and industry best practices.
  • Supervise and manage employees, volunteers, and contractors, providing guidance, support, and performance evaluations to ensure the achievement of fundraising targets.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive 3-year fundraising plan aligned with CQCS’s strategic objectives.
  • Lead the implementation, management, and evaluation of all activities related to grant writing, individual giving, foundations, major and corporate donors, stewardship, donor communications, and fundraising campaigns.
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Director of Operations to establish fundraising goals and consistency monitor progress towards meeting or exceeding annual revenue targets.
  • Develop and manage the fundraising budget, monitoring expenses, and ensuring financial accountability and transparency in all fundraising activities.
  • Work closely with the Management Team to develop and implement annual grant plans.
  • Conduct comprehensive research to identify potential funders that align with CQCS’s values and key initiatives .
  • Maintain ongoing relationships with grantors, ensuring timely reporting and stewardship.
  • Provide oversight to the development and implementation of strategic marketing and communication initiatives and programs throughout the organization, ensuring all outbound communications are clear and effective while ensuring brand management standards are maintained.
  • Support strong internal communication to achieve individual and organizational goals.   
  • Support media relations; craft and distribute media releases and coordinate any press requests.  
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of donor information, ensuring compliance with privacy laws and regulations, and implementing data protection measures to prevent unauthorized access or disclosure.
  • Implement robust security measures for electronic and physical records containing donor information, including secure storage, password protection, encryption, and regular backups.
  • Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards pertaining to data protection, confidentiality, and fundraising practices, and ensuring compliance within the organization.
